Not Using Correct Keywords

I see this a lot. Businesses using generic keywords to describe their business or even worse, using words that bring in freeloaders instead of potential clients by using keywords with the word "Free" or "cheap".

When searching for keywords, it is best to be as specific as you can be. Putting the focus on a popular keyword MIGHT get you some traffic, but it could also take a long time to start ranking with Google. If you use specific keywords, you have a higher chance of targetting the right visitors and get you better rankings on google. Both qualities that bring in more leads and sales.

For example, a real estate agent wouldn’t simply want to go for the keywords “real estate” in the beginning. It would be easier to rank for “real estate agent for Los Angeles homebuyers” – keywords that would probably start producing results immediately. You could optimize for more competitive keywords as your website expands.

Poor Quality Content

Quality content = visitors who stay on your website longer. It's pretty basic but many people think of content as something they need to pump out whether it's good or not. This is common in new blogging sites, and it does not help get more eyes on the article.

The importance of educational, informational, or entertaining content is to make your reader want to read more. Reduce the bounce rate of your website and use content that people want to read.

Not Using Analytics (correctly)

You may have amazing traffic to your website, but if your traffic doesn't convert, you won't get too far with your sales strategy.

You can see your conversions using Google analytics. Compare frequent phrases you use on your website and see what performs better. Which phrase brings in more quality customers?

Knowing will help you better optimize your site as a whole and know which efforts are worth focusing on and which ones should be let go.

Counting Characters

Don't get obsessed with character counting your meta descriptions. At the end of the day, Google can create it's own meta description for your website based on some content from your article if it is more relevant to the search term.

Whether you are writing 160 and 320 characters on about growth hacking and content marketing, if the user wants to know about growing their Instagram account and your page is ranking for those keywords, Google will create its own meta description.

Avoiding Rich Snippets

Add structured data optimization to your to-do list today. Make that meta description stand out from the crowd with rich snippets. Here is a Google article on how to optimize your data in a structured way.

You can also use tools like Schema Mockup Generator and the ultimate web code generator to help you with your rich snippets.

Not Using Special Characters

Orbit says that using a number in a headline will generate more shares on social media than headlines without a written number.

In fact, they recommend you use emoji's and other symbols in your headlines to create attention-grabbing content.

Forgetting About Local Search

If your company specializes in a localized area, local search is very important for your business. You'll want to include your region in your titles and meta descriptions to rank higher. Don't forget to add your contact information and business location in the header or footer section of your website.

Also don't forget to list yourself on Yelp, Google My Business, and other localized online areas.

Not Using Title and Meta Tags Correctly

If your websites title tags and meta tags are of your company name, then you're doing it all wrong. Every page on your website needs to have a unique title and a unique set of keywords.

If we take for example the website of a real estate agent, they could have real estate services as their main homepage keywords, so their homepage title would be something to the effect of “ABC Real Estate – Homebuyer Services” Then other pages in their portfolio could focus on more specific services that are popular queries, such as:

  • Mortgage Consultations –ABC Real Estate
  • Bank Recommendations – ABC Real Estate
  • Homes For Sale –ABC Real Estate

You can still use your company name on every page title but focus on keywords in front of the company name for friendlier SEO practices.

Want to get higher click-through rates, drive more targeted organic traffic, and improve conversions? Then avoid making these big meta description mistakes.

Meta descriptions are 160 characters of jam-packed information. Use the same practices with your meta descriptions as you would your title tags. Keep every meta description featuring different keywords, however, mention your company name in some way for optimal exposure.

Using Low-Quality Links

Did you know that a link to a high-quality website can improve your SEO ranking more than 10 links to low-quality websites?

It's good to focus on getting links that are relevant to your website and industry, do not have many outgoing links and do not contain spammy content such as adults or gambling websites.

Niel Patel states that you can also use free tools like SEOquake to check the strength of the domain and incoming links to the page.

Not Sounding Like a Human

Writing for Google first instead of your target audience is a huge mistake so many are making when trying to achieve SEO success. There is no magic formula for growth hacking the SEO system. Even if you do know how to do keyword research for maximum search traffic, using these keywords incorrectly can actually hurt your content.

Google will respond to human interaction on your site and determine it's validity with data it collects over time. Please remember to always write for your visitors first, and Google second.

Not Having a Call To Action

Providing your customer with a clear call to action can help your SEO by alerting Google that you have a well thought out website that people want to click around on.

Your call to action can provide conversion optimization which in turn can loop your customer through a marketing automation funnel. You can optimize your CTA to an affiliate link and make some money online or direct your readers to your social media marketing channels.

A good call to action gives your website the social proof that Google requires for ranking.

Conclusion

To conclude, SEO mistakes are made by anyone. Researching high performing keywords are the bread and butter of your SEO strategy and using them in your meta descriptions and title tags correctly can do wonders for your business.

Avoid making the mistakes outlined in this article, and you will get higher click-through rates that drive more targeted traffic and improve conversions.

It is so tough to get all those todo’s checked off on a website, especially if you’re doing it yourself. Just remember you don’t have to go back and fix everything at once, you can even implement new strategies going forward.

I never thought about using special characters in the title – I don’t see that being used often so it makes sense it would stand out. Hmmm… wondering if I would click on a link with emojis or different characters. I’ll have to think about that!
